She Steals From Chic Steals

Friday, May 21, 2010
This week my sewing machine has been very active. I'm a follower of Chic Steals blog because I love her cute, fashion-forward DIY tutorials and this week I decided to give them a try.

First up, I tried to make a Ruffled Top from a Men's Shirt. I started out with a $3 XL George shirt on clearance from Wal-mart much like this one:

And after following Chic Steals tutorial, I ended up with this:

If I had to make it again, I'd remember to remove the button placket BEFORE pinning and taking in the sides so "the girls" can have plenty of room (hence the bit of bunching near my arm). Other than that, the shirt fits and now I have a cute ruffled work shirt for the summer. The only change I made was that I baste stitched the shoulders at the top most seam (from arm hole to collar) and pulled the thread to give a ruched look instead re-shaping the arm hole.

Next, I made the Anni Albers Washer Ribbon Necklace. All you need to tackle this project are some washers and a ribbon.

If you want to try this out but prefer to follow photos instead of illustrated instructions, I found The Small Object's tutorial helpful.

Now that you've seen me give them a try, you should too.
